In this blog, I will jot down my thoughts on, as you have guessed, current affairs in the world of supply chain.
I'm a grad student in supply chain management. Previously, I had a stint in consulting in the same field. It's pretty interesting, how supply chain plays a key role in a firm's performance.
At the same time, it's a bit disheartening, that even today, even in developed countries, supply chain is often treated as a secondary function when it comes to creating corporate strategy. It's a common complaint that supply chain managers have, and it reflects when they talk to forums, including classrooms.
Is it changing? To a certain extent, yes. There is a significant amount of research that is being done in this field. Many companies are actively engaging supply chain professionals to improve profitability. Still, most companies do not look at supply chain as a key driver of sales; they try to minimize supply chain costs.
During my stint as a consultant, I came across more firms that wanted to develop lower cost supply chains that could give them the same service levels that they used to have, rather than create new supply chains that would increase their overall sales.
In this blog, I'd like to talk about events around the world where supply chain innovation is, or can be, a big part of a firm's strategy.
I also believe that we're depleting our resources - on this planet - at a much faster rate than what is being regenerated. And if you think about it, while individuals do consume a lot of resources, it's the institutions that consume much, much more. And since supply chains play a very large role in any institution, there is a large contribution that supply chains can make to make this world a greener living place.
I'd put my thoughts, and collection of thoughts from around the world, on sustainable supply chains here as well. It's heartening to start a blog like this on World Environment Day.
